Migraine and Headache Treatment Brisbane
The causes and triggers for migraine and non-migraine headaches vary from person to person and can be very complex. The cervical spine and surrounding musculature often contribute to those pain conditions. There are many parts of the neck that can cause pain referral into the head, including nerves, joints and muscles – and identifying which of these structures are affected and why, is what Physiotherapists use to create the most effective treatment for your particular circumstances.
What is migraine?
Migraine is an inherited disorder of the activity of the trigeminal nerve, and of the way the brain regulates pain and sensory information. These dysfunctions lead to recurrent migraine headaches and other, often debilitating migraine symptoms.
Unfortunately, migraine is an often underdiagnosed and undertreated pain condition and is frequently considered ‘just’ a headache. However, headache is just one of many migraine symptoms that vary across patients and affect them to varying degrees.
How is migraine treated?
Each migraine experience is different and so is the response to migraine treatments. That’s why an individual multimodal approach to migraine is very important, combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Pain Physiotherapy can be an effective form of treatment for migraine and for cervicogenic headaches, through the use of massage techniques, joint mobilisation techniques, gentle facilitated stretching, and other techniques such as trigger point therapy and dry needling.
Our Pain Physiotherapist is expertly trained to assess what contributes to your migraine or cervicogenic headaches, and will develop a treatment and management plan for you. This plan can include hands-on treatments, home rehabilitation, ergonomic or activity modification, and exercise and postural advice.
Our aim is to help you manage your migraine and headaches so you can be pain free every day!
How can Pain Physiotherapy help treat Migraine and Headaches?
Our Pain Physiotherapist aims to treat the pain associated with headaches and migraine through:
- Isolating the musculoskeletal causes and contributors through a thorough orthopaedic and ergonomic assessment.
- Using techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy, joint and neural mobilisations and other advanced hands-on treatments to address your pain.
- Looking at contributing factors such as poor posture, muscle imbalances, previous injuries, medical history, lifestyle and activity levels; and creating a home rehabilitation program for you to manage your migraine or cervicogenic headaches.
- Assessing your prognosis and creating a treatment plan to ensure you get the best out of a Physiotherapy course of treatment.
