How can remedial massage help chronic pain?

The brain, pain and touch

The experience of chronic pain is neurological in nature, as in it is an ongoing process that occurs in the brain. It can start from injury or trauma (both physical or emotional), but over time, become a persistent loop. This means that the brain learns from painful experiences, and sometimes, for a variety of reasons, chronically responds to normal situations with abnormal pain. Through the use of therapeutic touch, via remedial massage and other musculoskeletal techniques such as trigger point therapy, we can begin to retrain how the brain feels pain in the body. Massage can be a positive stimulus, and this can help the brain begin to use its own pain-relieving mechanisms, helping to retrain the painful responses to be less so, over time.

Holistic approach

As Myotherapists, understanding your chronic pain experience means we look at the whole story. We assess not just the current situation, and your ongoing symptoms, but where and how the pain began, and the experiences that might have contributed to why the pain has become chronic in nature. We look at both in the internal workings of your musculoskeletal and neurological systems, and also the external environments that may contribute to your pain, such as ergonomics, stress levels, and daily activities. The clearer and more detailed a picture we can have of your story, the better equipped we will be to work with you to treat your chronic pain.

Combining remedial massage with innovative pain management treatments

At Mobilise Remedial Massage, we approach chronic pain management using current neuroscience-based treatments such as graded motor imagery (GMI), graded neuro-desensitisation and pain education, as well as incorporating remedial massage, therapeutic touch and musculoskeletal techniques into our sessions. We will also look at your daily activities and ergonomics to identify contributing factors to your chronic pain, and work with you to find easy solutions and adaptations to enable recovery. Our approach is to put you and your needs and goals first; to create a treatment that is client-centred,  ensuring your recovery is as fast and effective as possible.
